PuddinN64 Presents: 10 Third Party N64 Games That Don't Suck.
Posted by puddinN64 May. 23, 2009 @ 2:29 PM EDTSo, as you may or may not know, I am a big fan of the Nintendo 64 Video Game console, and while I have sung the praises about the system for a while now, I think it's time that I bring up one of the fundamental problems of the system: POOR THIRD PARTY SUPPORT.
While Nintendo had been a giant back in the 8-bit and 16-bit era, it's decision to stick with cartridges during the early 3D era made it unpopular with many companies. A perfect example of this was Square Enix's decision to take it's Final Fantasy series and put it on Sony's Playstation system instead of the N64, despite a long history with Nintendo.
So, needless to say, The N64 was lacking in the third party game department. Ask anyone about their favorite games for the system and most likely it was either a game directly made by Nintendo or one of their 2nd Party developers (Like Rare). Most developers went with the Playstation because of it's disc capabilities, and those developers who did stick around, usually churned out crap like Batman Beyond. It was not a good place for the N64 to be in.
So, today, I will be listing and going over 10 third party games for the Nintendo that don't suck. These are the games that were not made by Nintendo, but still managed to be playable, entertaining, and worth purchasing. Please remember that this is only my opinion.
The Criteria:
The games on this list:
*Must have been released on the Nintendo 64 System during it's natural life span by an actual game company
* Cannot be published by Nintendo or one of it's 2nd parties.
Now, here's the list:
10. Space Station Silicon Valley
Before they were Rockstar North, a company called DMA Design created games for multiple systems. In a creepy foreshadowing to their future GTA games, they created this game. The premise is simple: Using a computer chip robot, you are charged with saving the Earth by possessing (Stealing) multiple robotic animals and using their unique abilities to get through certain puzzles. Through it's unique gameplay, this platforming title is a must-play for any true N64 gamer.
9. Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine
8. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
7. Spider-Man
6. Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber
5. 007: The World is Not Enough
4. San Francisco Rush 2049
3. WWF No Mercy
2. Harvest Moon 64
1. Rayman 2: The Great Escape
Honorable Mentions:
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
All-Star Baseball 2001
NBA Courtside 2: Featuring Kobe Bryant
Rocket: Robot on Wheels
Star Wars: Battle for Naboo
International Superstar Soccer '98
